An air conditioner works in a sealed circuit. The refrigerant gas inside is not a fuel and it is not used up. If the gas level is low, it has leaked out somewhere, and the leak has to be found and repaired. This guide explains the common signs and what to expect from a proper service.

The AC runs for long but cooling is weak.
Ice forms on the indoor unit or on the thin copper pipe.
A hissing or bubbling sound comes from the pipes or the units.
Oily patches appear at pipe joints or on the outdoor unit, because the oil in the system leaks along with the gas.
The outdoor unit runs continuously and the electricity bill rises.
The AC cools for a few days after a refill and then weakens again.
