AC Not Cooling? 8 Common Reasons and What to Check First

When an AC runs but the room stays warm, the cause is usually one of a few common faults. Some can be checked safely at home in five minutes. Others need a technician with the right tools, especially anything that involves gas, electrical parts or the outdoor unit.

Quick checks you can do yourself

  • Make sure the mode is set to Cool and the temperature is set well below the room temperature.
  • Keep doors and windows closed and check that the AC capacity suits the room size.
  • Look at the air filter behind the front panel. If it is covered in dust, switch the AC off and wash it.
  • Check that the outdoor unit fan is spinning and nothing is blocking the air around it.

8 common reasons an AC stops cooling

Dirty air filter. A clogged filter cuts the airflow, so the room cools slowly and the indoor coil can even freeze.

Dirty indoor or outdoor coil. Dust and grease on the coils stop heat from moving out of the room. A proper wash during service fixes this in most cases.

Low refrigerant gas. An AC does not use up gas like fuel. If the gas is low, there is a leak somewhere, and topping up without repairing the leak gives only a temporary fix.

Faulty capacitor. A weak capacitor can stop the outdoor fan or compressor from starting. You may hear a humming sound from the outdoor unit.

Sensor or PCB fault. If the temperature sensor gives a wrong reading, the compressor may switch off too early or never start.

Frozen evaporator coil. Ice on the indoor unit or the thin pipe is a sign of low airflow or low gas. Switch the AC off and let it thaw before calling for service.

Compressor problem. A failing compressor gives weak cooling, tripping or unusual noise. This needs a proper test before any decision on repair.

Wrong capacity or heavy room load. A small AC in a large room, a sun-facing wall or a kitchen next door can make cooling feel weak even when the AC is healthy.
