Overview

When a microwave turns on, the light works and the plate rotates but the food stays cold, the part that makes the microwaves has usually stopped working. Before anything else, a safety note: a microwave contains a high voltage capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge even after unplugging. Never open the cover yourself.

Common causes

  • Magnetron failure. This is the part that produces the microwaves. When it fails, the oven looks normal but does not heat.
  • High voltage diode or high voltage capacitor failure. These supply power to the magnetron.
  • Door switches or door latch problem. The oven will not start heating if it thinks the door is open.
  • Blown fuse or thermal cut-out that has tripped because of overheating.
  • Control board or keypad fault.
  • Running the microwave empty. It can damage parts, so always keep a microwave-safe cup of water inside when testing.

Safe checks you can do

  • Test with a cup of water for one minute. If it does not warm up, note the result.
  • Make sure the door closes fully and the door seal is clean.
  • Try a different power socket and check the plug.
  • Look for burn marks on the inner wall, which can mean sparking from food residue or metal. Clean the inside with a damp cloth.
  • Use only microwave-safe containers and never metal.
