The compressor is the heart of a refrigerator. It circulates the refrigerant that removes heat from inside the fridge. Compressor faults can be serious, but many problems that look like a failed compressor are actually smaller and cheaper parts. This guide helps you describe the problem clearly to a technician.

Common signs

  • The fridge is not cooling, but the light and the fan work.
  • The compressor runs all the time and never switches off.
  • A clicking sound is heard every few minutes, and then the fridge goes quiet.
  • The back or side of the fridge feels unusually hot.
  • The MCB trips or the fridge shuts off soon after it starts.
  • A loud buzzing or rattling noise from the back.

Parts that are often mistaken for a bad compressor

  • Start relay or overload protector. A worn relay can stop the compressor from starting, with a clicking sound.
  • Thermostat or temperature sensor. A faulty one can cause no cooling or constant running.
  • Condenser coil covered in dust. It makes the compressor work harder and run hot.
  • Cooling fan on the compressor side or the evaporator fan.
  • Door gasket that does not seal. Warm air leaks in and the compressor keeps running.
  • Low refrigerant because of a leak.

Simple checks before you call

  • Make sure the plug and the power supply are fine and that the voltage is stable.
  • Check that the door closes fully and the gasket is clean and tight.
  • Keep space of a few inches behind and beside the fridge for airflow.
  • Do not overfill the fridge and do not keep hot food inside.
