Overview

Water around a refrigerator is a common complaint. In most cases the cause is simple, such as a blocked drain or a door that does not close properly. Finding where the water appears helps a lot.

Water inside the fridge, near the back wall

Frost-free and many double-door models melt the frost from the cooling coil and send the water out through a small drain hole. If that hole is blocked by dirt or ice, the water collects at the bottom of the fridge compartment and may overflow.

What you can do: switch off the fridge, empty the food, let any ice melt, and clean the drain hole gently with a soft cloth. Do not use sharp tools near the back panel.

Water on the floor under or in front of the fridge

  • The drain tray at the bottom is cracked, misaligned or overflowing.
  • The drain pipe has come loose from the tray.
  • A water line is leaking, if your model has a water dispenser or an ice maker.

Other common causes

  • Door gasket not sealing. Warm air enters, moisture condenses and turns into water or frost.
  • Fridge is not level, so water flows to the wrong place.
  • Door left open often or hot food kept inside.
  • Too much frost on the cooling coil because of a failed defrost heater, timer or sensor.

Quick checks

  • Check that the door closes fully and the gasket is clean and has no gaps.
  • Use a spirit level or place a small level on top and adjust the front feet.
  • Look at the drain tray for cracks.
  • Keep food from touching the back wall.

When to call a technician

If the water returns after cleaning, or the freezer builds up thick ice, a defrost heater, timer or sensor is often the reason and needs testing. Keep the fridge unplugged while water is near electrical parts.
