RO giving less water, slow flow or a strange taste? Learn the common causes such as choked filters, a worn membrane or low inlet pressure, and when to serv…
Overview
A water purifier that gives very little water or water that tastes different is usually asking for service. The causes are mostly related to the filters, the membrane or the water pressure.
Common causes of low water flow
Choked sediment pre-filter, which is the first filter that catches dirt and sand.
Worn or choked RO membrane, especially if the supply water is hard or has high TDS.
Low inlet water pressure or a partly closed tap.
Faulty pump or booster pump, or a loose power connection.
Low pressure in the storage tank, so water is not pushed out of the tap.
Blocked or kinked pipes and a stuck inlet valve.
Common causes of bad taste or smell
The carbon filter is exhausted and no longer removes odours.
Filters have not been changed on time.
Stored water is old, because the purifier was not used for several days. Drain the first tank before drinking.
The purifier has not been sanitised for a long time.
What you can do
Check that the water supply to the purifier is on and the tap is fully open.
Look at the filters. If they are dark or muddy, they are due for a change.
Note when the last service and filter change were done.
Do not keep the purifier unused for long periods. If you were away, drain and refill the tank.
When to service the RO
Filter and membrane life depends on your water quality and how much you use. A service by a technician includes checking pressure, the pump, the filters and the membrane. If you are unsure about your water, a TDS check can be done at the time of service.
