Water stuck in the drum is a common washing machine fault. Learn why it happens, how to check the drain filter safely and when to call a technician.

Overview

When a washing machine leaves water in the drum or stops before the spin cycle, the drain system is usually the problem. Always switch the machine off and unplug it before you check anything.

Common causes

Blocked drain filter. Coins, buttons, lint and small clothes collect in the filter or pump area and block the flow. Many front-load machines have a small filter door at the bottom front.

Bent or clogged drain hose. A kinked hose or a hose full of lint slows or stops the drain.

Faulty drain pump. If the pump makes a humming sound but no water moves, or makes no sound at all, it may be blocked or worn out.

Lid or door switch fault. Some machines will not drain or spin if they do not detect that the lid or door is closed.

Control board fault. If everything else is fine, the board or a sensor may not be sending the drain signal.

  • Check that the drain hose is straight and not squeezed behind the machine.
  • Clean the drain filter if your model has an access door. Keep a tray and cloth ready, because water will come out.
  • Do not put metal tools into the pump area.
