Washing Machine Shaking or Making Noise? Causes and Easy Fixes
29 Oct 2026 · 2 min read
A washing machine that jumps, shakes or makes loud noise during spin often has a simple cause like an uneven floor or overload. Learn what to check and whe…
Overview
Some vibration during the spin cycle is normal. If your washing machine moves across the floor, bangs or makes a grinding noise, something needs attention. Many causes are easy to fix, but a few need a technician.
Simple causes to check first
The machine is not level. Adjust the feet so it stands firm and does not rock when you push a corner.
The load is unbalanced or too heavy. Heavy items such as blankets can bunch up on one side. Redistribute the clothes or wash fewer items.
Transit bolts were not removed. A new front-load machine has bolts at the back that hold the drum during transport. They must be taken out before use.
Loose items in the drum such as coins, hooks or buttons can rattle.
Weak floor or a spot with a slight slope.
Causes that need a technician
Worn shock absorbers or suspension springs. The drum is no longer held steadily during spin.
Worn drum bearing. A deep rumbling or grinding noise that grows louder with speed is a typical sign.
Loose drum pulley or motor mount.
Broken drive belt on some models.
Foreign object stuck between the drum and the tub.
Quick tips
Do not keep using the machine if it makes a metal grinding sound, because it can damage the tub.
Wash heavy items in smaller loads.
Use a firm, level surface, and avoid placing the machine on a tiled slope or a loose stand.
When to call
If levelling and a smaller load do not help, or you hear grinding, a technician can check the bearing, shock absorbers and belt. Early repair is usually less costly than waiting until the tub or drum is damaged.
