Water dripping from your split AC indoor unit is a common problem. Find out the usual causes, what you can check and when to call a technician.
Overview
Some water from the outdoor pipe is normal because the AC removes moisture from the room air. Water dripping or pouring from the indoor unit is not normal and should be fixed before it damages the wall or furniture.
Common causes
Choked drain pipe. Dust, algae and insects can block the drain pipe, so water backs up and overflows from the indoor unit.
Dirty air filter. A clogged filter reduces airflow and can freeze the coil. When the ice melts, a lot of water drips at once.
Low gas. A refrigerant leak can make the evaporator coil freeze and then drip when the AC is switched off.
Wrong installation slope. The indoor unit must be fitted with a slight tilt toward the drain side, and the drain pipe needs a continuous downward slope.
Cracked or loose drain tray. A damaged tray lets the water escape from the wrong place.
What you can check safely
Switch the AC off and wash the filter.
Look for ice on the indoor unit or the thin copper pipe.
Check that the drain pipe outlet is not kinked or bent upward.
Run the fan mode for some time to melt the ice, if the coil was frozen.
When to call a technician
If the leak continues after cleaning the filter, if there is repeated icing, or if the drain pipe needs to be cleared with proper pressure, call a technician. Repeated freezing usually points to low gas or an airflow problem that needs inspection.
